Thyroid Goiter: Classification and Treatment

Goiter is a disease caused by insufficient intake of iodine. Iodine needed by the body as iodide then being trapped by the thyroid gland in the neck to produce tyroksine, a hormone responsible of metabolic rate of the body. Thyroid Goiter occurs when somebody has less intake of iodine in foods. Then it makes a hormone from hipofise to force the works of thyroid gland, and make it cell become has bigger cell. And the gland also become has bigger size.

Lack of iodine in long time can lead many health problems. Beside goiter, there are many disease related to this problem. It can lead aborts of pregnancy, abnormalities of metabolism, low IQ point in newborn, cretinism, and premature childbirth. Thyroid Goiter most commonly related to confidence problems of somebody, have bigger size of neck makes not only difficulties in the daily activity but also confidence to others.

Classification of thyroid goiter:
1.    Goiter grade 0 : normal
There is no dilated size of thyroid glands, from palpation or observation.

2.    Goiter Grade IA
The dilatation cannot be seen but it can be palpated.

3.    Goiter Grade IB
The thyroid dilatation can be seen by gazing upward, and there is dilated thyroid gland when its palpated.

4.    Goiter grade II
It’s bigger than grade IB

5.    Goiter grade III
The dilated thyroid gland is so big that can be seen from 6 meters away.

Goiter can be prevented by adequate intake of iodine in your foods, such as seafood, fish, or other sources. The government also has policy of salt fortification of iodine. The goiter treatment is by iodine injection therapy.  However it’s much better to prevent the disease than cure it.  So pay attention of your foods nutrition, make sure you have an adequate intake of nutrition you need.
